Oral Fernblock® & Supporting High-Risk Patients
HELIOCARE's oral supplement range provides photoprotection support using patented Fernblock® (Polypodium leucotomos) extract, developed as an adjuvant to topical sunscreen in patients where photoprotection is clinically critical. Polymorphic light eruption (PMLE)
In placebo-controlled studies of around 80 PMLE patients, daily oral Fernblock® during sun exposure significantly reduced skin reactions and symptoms; 74% of those continuing use through summer reported minimal or no recurrence.7,8
Vitiligo
Placebo-controlled studies show improved re-pigmentation and higher response rates when oral Fernblock® is combined with NB-UVB phototherapy versus phototherapy alone, with effects also linked to reduced CD3/CD25 T-cell activity in PUVA regimens.9
Melasma & hyperpigmentation
Oral Fernblock® as an adjunct to hydroquinone and sunscreen produced significantly greater and faster mMASI score improvements than placebo, with 31% of patients achieving ≥75% improvement versus 6% on placebo alone.10

Studies show Fernblock® reduces UV- and pollution-induced ROS, MMP-1 collagen breakdown, and mitochondrial damage, while protecting Langerhans cells and fibroblasts against visible light and infrared-A exposure in vitro and in vivo.11

Studies show oral and topical Fernblock® as an adjunct to PDT and cryotherapy improves AK clearance and AKASI scores versus standard care alone, with reviews reporting reduced CPDs, p53 activation, and lower recurrence risk.12

This innovative technology combines two powerful plant-based actives: Fernblock®+, Cantabria Labs' patented Polypodium leucotomos extract with clinically proven antioxidant and photoprotective properties, and ASPA, a patented extract derived from Aspalathus linearis (Rooibos), a plant naturally rich in flavonoids with recognised biological activity.
